A local activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was beaten to death on Friday night in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi, reportedly following a dispute between two rival groups within the party.

The victim was identified as Ershad Ali, 65, a member of the Yusufpur union unit of BNP. The incident took place at Sipaipara after evening prayers.

According to police, tensions had been running high between supporters of two BNP leaders one group aligned with Anwar Hossain Ujjal and the other with Abu Syed Chand MP over the issue of naming a local lawmaker as chief guest at a party programme.

A meeting was held earlier in the day to resolve the matter, but it ended without any agreement.

Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Charghat Police Station, said Ershad was attacked while returning home after Esha prayers.

A group of men allegedly intercepted him and beat him with sticks, leaving him dead at the scene.
Police later recovered the body and sent it to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Law enforcement officials said investigations are underway and legal action will be taken against those involved.
