A fire engine driver collapsed with heart attack while rushing to a fire scene as the fire truck he was driving subsequently dashed a passenger bus, which killed a pedestrian when its driver lost control of his vehicle as well.
Officials and witnesses said the firemen were called out after the fire broke out at a garments factory on the outskirts of this river port city while 50-year-old Jahangir Hossain was driving one of the fire engines.
The blaze of the Fakir Garments in Fatullah area was eventually doused without any casualty or major damage but the tragedy occurred as Hossain nearly reached the fire scene.
"The cardiac arrest killed him almost instantly while the fire truck hit the backside of the Ananda Paribahan bus, causing to knock four pedestrians, one of them died on the spot as well," Narayanganj Bus-Minibus Owners Association president Didar Ahmed told reporters.
He said a pedestrian was also killed in the accident.
The pedestrian could not be identified immediately.
Several thousand people cordoned off the spot and movement of all sorts of vehicle was halted for several hours during noon.
"Police is taking action to ease the movement of the vehicles after removing all those ruins vehicles", said Anisur Rahman, Office in Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station.
The fire eventually has come under control as a total of eight fire fighting units rushed to the spot to bring the fire under control.
