Chhatra Dal panel walks out JUCSU election alleging rigging

VP candidate Sheikh Sadi Hasan from the Chhatra Dal-backed panel held an urgent press conference, alleging that the ballot papers and OMR machines were supplied by a company owned by a leader of Jamaat-e-Islami.

The Chhatra Dal-backed panel has withdrawn from the Central Student Union (JUCSU) election at Jahangirnagar University, citing allegations of vote manipulation.

The panel claimed that the university administration colluded with Jamaat-affiliated candidates to ensure a win for the rival panel.

On Thursday, 11 September, more than an hour before the scheduled end of voting, GS candidate Tanzila Hosain Baishakhi held a press conference at around 4:45 pm to formally announce the withdrawal of the panel from the election.

Tanzila Hosain Baishakhi alleged multiple irregularities during the ongoing JUCSU election. She claimed that at Female Hall No. 15, the ink used for marking voters’ fingers was fading, and a ballot paper was found on the floor. As a result, voting at the hall was suspended for about two hours.

The panel also alleged that their VP candidate was not allowed entry into one of the halls. At the Tajuddin Ahmad Hall, voting was reportedly halted because some voters’ photographs were missing from the list.

The panel further claimed that ballots printed by a company owned by a Jamaat leader were being used and that their agents were not allowed to monitor voting in all halls.

The GS candidate added, “The VP candidate of the rival Chhatra Shibir-supported panel raised questions about why the administration printed an additional 10% of ballots.

Our concern is whether 10–20% of ballots printed by the Jamaat-linked company were handed over to Shibir. We also question whether our candidates and agents were blocked while votes were being cast using these fake ballots.”

The panel further alleged that the same Jamaat-linked company was given the responsibility of operating CCTV cameras to monitor polling centers.

They claimed that the university administration colluded with Jamaat and Shibir-affiliated groups to manipulate the election and undermine the Chhatra Dal-backed panel’s chances.
