Container handling at Chattogram port sees boost under new management: Govt

Container handling efficiency at Chattogram Port’s New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) has seen a notable improvement in the first week since Chattogram Dry Dock Limited (CDDL) took over operational control.

According to a press release shared on the official Facebook page of the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, from 7 to 13 July 2025, the NCT terminal handled an average of 3,181 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) per day.

This marks a daily increase of 225 TEUs compared to the average of 2,956 TEUs per day in the previous week, when the terminal was operated by Saif Powertec Limited.

The Ministry of Shipping approved the handover of operations after Saif Powertec‍‍`s contract with Chattogram Port expired on 6 July 2025. CDDL officially assumed operational responsibility the next day, ushering in what port officials are calling a period of better coordination and improved discipline.

In just the first week of management, loading and unloading operations of 10 vessels were completed. Additionally, four vessels are currently being handled simultaneously at NCT’s four berths — an indicator of enhanced terminal efficiency.

Officials suggest the increase in container throughput reflects not only better logistics but also smoother turnaround times, as the new operator aims to streamline port operations and reduce congestion.

Chattogram Port, the country’s busiest seaport, plays a vital role in Bangladesh’s international trade. The recent improvement could signal a positive trajectory for cargo handling performance in the coming months under CDDL’s oversight.
