Ferry movement restored at Shimulia-Jajira route after 9 hours suspension

Ferry movement at Shimulia-Jajira route of Munsiganj and Shariatpur districts has resumed after a 9-hour suspension.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) suspended the ferry movement Sunday night as the water and waves increased in Padma River leaving thousands of vehicles waiting at both banks of the river.

“There are strong currents in the river. The ferry service was halted at around 9.30 pm last night as the masters expressed their inability to operate the ferry at night. But numerous vehicles are stuck at the two wharves. Suffering will increase if the ferry is stopped. For this reason, the masters have started operating the ferry with the advice of BIWTC waterway experts,” said Salauddin Ahmed, manager of Banglabazar ghat.

According to BIWTC sources, there were eight ferries plying the Shimulia-Jazira route. Two dump ferries and a small ferry have been shut down since Saturday morning due to rising water and currents in the Padma River.
