Red alert in India as Teesta river swells, Bangladesh issues flood warning

Due to continuous heavy rainfall in India’s Sikkim region, the water level of the Teesta River has risen dangerously, prompting a red alert in several districts including Mangan, Gyalshing, and Soreng. Local authorities have warned of potential floods and landslides.

Originating from Sikkim’s Chitamu Lake, the Teesta River flows into Bangladesh through the Kaliganj border in Nilphamari. Any upstream flooding significantly impacts downstream regions in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has warned that water levels in the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers may rise over the next three days in Rangpur Division, with the Teesta possibly crossing the danger mark.

Heavy rainfall in upstream regions is also expected to cause river levels in Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions to rise over the next two days, potentially flooding low-lying areas near rivers like the Sarigowain, Jadukata, Dhalai, Someswari, and Manu.

Water in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers is increasing and may remain above danger levels for the next two days before receding.

In Chattogram Division, rivers such as the Gomti, Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Sangu, and Matamuhuri are expected to remain stable for the next 24 hours and then begin to recede.

Meanwhile, water levels in the Ganges-Padma and Brahmaputra-Jamuna basins may continue to rise for five days, but are forecasted to stay below the danger level.
