BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain has claimed that BNP is the only popular political party in the country, stating that even some individuals within the current administration admit that the party would win a two-thirds majority if elections are held in December.
Speaking at an event marking the 44th death anniversary of former President Ziaur Rahman, Mosharraf said that the interim government will eventually have to step aside.
“If elections are held in December, they can transfer power with dignity to an elected government. Any delay may lead to further conspiracies, creating uncertainty around when the election will take place,” he cautioned.
He argued that holding the election in June would be impractical, as it would be too late and might give room for fugitive authoritarian forces to deepen conspiracies.
“February and March will be taken up by Ramadan and Eid, April and May by public exams, and June brings the monsoon season. So, December is the only viable window,” he explained. He urged the government to announce an election date when ready.
Mosharraf noted that the chief advisor has called another round of talks regarding electoral reforms and suggested that if a minimum consensus can be reached, the election process should move forward.
Expressing disappointment with recent remarks made by the chief advisor during a visit to Japan, he said BNP was disheartened.
“They said only BNP wants elections. Who doesn’t want elections? Everyone does. We’ve provided our reasoning—others should do the same,” he added.
During the event, he also spoke about the legacy and contributions of Ziaur Rahman. The meeting was presided over by fellow BNP Standing Committee member A Z M Zahid.
