Leaders of Dhaka University’s Chhatra Dal have accused the Islami Chhatra Shibir of continuing “secret politics” on campus, using their positions to harass and intimidate female students.
They claim that the university’s vice-chancellor and proctor have been complicit in allowing these activities to continue.
Speaking at a human chain on Wednesday afternoon in front of the Supreme Court’s main gate, Chhatra Dal leaders condemned threats of gang rape against a female student who filed a writ petition related to the upcoming DUCSU elections.
Female leaders of the organization also spoke, highlighting instances of cyberbullying against women activists, which they said restricts their ability to participate in politics.
Chhatra Dal president Rakibul Islam stated that Shibir leaders have carried out covert operations for over 15 years, operating under the banner of student politics while attacking ordinary students and Chhatra Dal members.
“They claim to fear no one but Allah, yet for over 15 years, they have shown more fear of ‘murderer Hasina’ than divine authority, failing even to post a statement against her,” he said.
He called for the unmasking of those involved in secret politics, pledging to resist such activities wherever they occur on campus or beyond.
General Secretary Nasir Uddin added that Shibir members have engaged in cyberbullying and physical attacks against female political activists nationwide. He urged that student politics be conducted transparently and democratically, free from clandestine operations.
Nasir highlighted that the current DU administration, particularly the vice-chancellor and proctor, have allowed secret political networks to flourish. He demanded a formal declaration from the university that no “secret politics” would be tolerated on campus.
The Chhatra Dal leaders also called on female students to withhold votes from any Shibir panels in the upcoming DUCSU election on September 9, citing threats and harassment against female activists as justification. They stressed the need to ensure the safety of students and to end the continued cyberbullying and intimidation perpetrated by Shibir members.
