DU hall union polls: 1,035 candidates finalized for 13 posts

The final candidate list for the Dhaka University hall union elections has been released, confirming that 1,035 candidates will contest for 13 posts across 18 halls.

A statement from the university’s Public Relations Office noted that a total of 1,109 nomination papers had been filed initially.

However, 73 candidates later withdrew their candidacies, while one nomination was canceled.

The distribution of candidates varies widely across the halls. Amar Ekushey Hall leads with 76 candidates, closely followed by Surya Sen Hall with 75, and Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall with the same number. Other halls such as Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, Bijoy Ekattor Hall, and Kabi Jasimuddin Hall also drew a high number of candidates, ranging from 68 to 73. In contrast, Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall saw the lowest number of contestants, with only 31 candidates in the race.

The process also witnessed a significant number of withdrawals. The highest withdrawal was recorded at Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Hall, where 11 candidates pulled out. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and Bijoy Ekattor Hall each lost 9 candidates, while smaller withdrawals occurred across almost all other halls, including Amar Ekushey, Fazlul Huq Muslim, Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque, Haji Muhammad Mohsin, and Surya Sen halls.

With the final list now published, campaigning is expected to intensify across the university’s residential halls, as more than a thousand candidates compete for the limited posts in one of the most keenly observed student union elections in Bangladesh.
