Independent vice president candidate for the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections, Jalal Ahmad Jalal, has been expelled from Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall after allegedly stabbing his roommate during an altercation on Tuesday midnight.
The victim, Rabiul Haque, a student of the Political Science Department (2018–19 session), was seriously injured and is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Witnesses said the attack followed a long-standing dispute between the two roommates.
Hall provost Professor Md. Sirajul Islam announced Jalal’s immediate expulsion, stating that such “brutal conduct” would not be tolerated and that measures would be taken to revoke his studentship as well. Jalal is a student of the Television and Film Department at Dhaka University.
Narrating the incident from his hospital bed, Rabiul said Jalal entered the room around 12:30 a.m., turned on the lights, and made loud noises that disturbed his sleep. When Rabiul asked him to keep quiet as he had to attend the library in the morning, Jalal allegedly insulted him as an “outsider” and attacked him with a knife.
Following the incident, university authorities handed Jalal over to police. Dhaka University Proctor Prof. Saifuddin Ahmad said legal action would be taken against him in accordance with the law, adding that the incident would not affect the upcoming DUCSU polls.
He further acknowledged that Jalal had previous allegations against him, though details of earlier administrative action were not immediately available.
The proctor also confirmed that many students have demanded the resignation of the Mohsin Hall provost over the incident.
He said the university administration would review their demands if students formally presented them to the vice-chancellor.
