Former ministers Shahjahan, Salman, Anisul among 5 placed on remand

A Dhaka court has granted remand for five prominent former government officials and politicians, including former Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, former Prime Minister’s Adviser Salman F Rahman, and former Law Minister Anisul Huq, in connection with various cases filed after recent political unrest.

On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam issued the remand orders. Shahjahan Khan, Salman F Rahman, and Anisul Huq were each placed on a two-day remand in a murder case filed over the death of protester Sajedur Rahman Omar during a demonstration in the Jatrabari area last year. The court granted the remand following police requests for further interrogation.

According to the case details, Omar was injured in a gunfire incident during a student-led protest on July 21 last year and later died on August 24 while undergoing treatment.

On January 3, a murder case was filed naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 80 others as accused.

Additionally, former State Minister for Liberation War Affairs ABM Tajul Islam has been shown arrested in another murder case linked to the death of protester Md. Ramzan Mia Jibon during an anti-discrimination student movement on August 5 last year.

The incident occurred near the Awami League central office on Bangabandhu Avenue, where Ramzan was shot and later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

In separate rulings, the court also granted one-day remand for former Dhaka-5 MP Kazi Monirul Islam Manu in a murder case involving the killing of Riton Uddin in the Jatrabari area. However, Manu’s remand request in another case related to the murder of a man named Russell was rejected.

Furthermore, the court approved a three-day remand for Rear Admiral (Retd.) Sohail, former chairman of Chittagong Port Authority, in a case concerning an attempted murder of Gono Odhikar Parishad activist Badrul Islam Saimon during the BNP’s grand rally in October last year.

These arrests and remand orders are part of an ongoing legal process targeting several former ministers, MPs, senior government officials, police, and military officers following the political changeover in August last year.

Many have been detained and are facing multiple charges related to protest-related violence and alleged human rights violations.
