The Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-starrer Stree 2 delivered a massive opening at the box office on Indian Independence Day, demolishing all expectations.

The film has surpassed the opening day collections of 2023’s hit Gadar 2, which started its box office journey with Rs 40.1 crore.

Stree 2 had preview shows on Wednesday evening, followed by a proper release on Thursday.

As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film has made Rs 54.35 crore collectively on both days.

Early estimates suggest that the film made Rs 46 crore on Thursday and Rs 8.35 crore from the Wednesday evening shows.

Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 is by far the biggest opener of the year.

Before this, the biggest Hindi opener of the year was Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone-starrer Fighter, which made Rs 24.6 crore on its opening day in January.

Kalki 2898 AD, which was released across multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu and Tamil, made Rs 95 crore on its opening day, making it the biggest Indian opener of the year.

Stree 2 clashed against John Abraham’s Vedaa and the Akshay Kumar-starrer Khel Khel Mein. Vedaa was also released in Tamil and Telugu, but could only bring in Rs 6.52 crore across India, while Khel Khel Mein only made Rs 5 crore.
The Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor film is a part of producer Dinesh Vijan’s horror-comedy universe, which started with Stree in 2018. and also includes Roohi, Bhediya and Munjya. Munjya was released earlier this year without much promotions, and managed to bring in Rs 107.48 crore during its theatrical run, making it the third biggest Hindi hit of the year after Fighter (Rs 199.45 crore) and Shaitaan (Rs 149.49 crore).

Stree 2 also stars Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Bannerjee, among others.
