The European Union wants to see all individuals responsible for human rights violations in Bangladesh held accountable through a process that is both fair and transparent.
EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller made the statement while speaking at a DCAB Talk hosted by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the Jatiya Press Club on Monday.
"We want every perpetrator to be brought to justice, but the process must be transparent and ensure fairness," Miller said in response to a question regarding the human rights abuses during the July-August uprising.
He expressed full support for the reform measures introduced by the interim government but noted that meaningful reform takes time and cannot be rushed.
Miller also underlined that the next national election must be free, fair, and credible.
When asked about the EU`s stance on election timing, given the varying views among political parties, he responded that it is a matter for the Bangladeshi people to determine.
“We’re not applying any pressure regarding the election date,” he clarified.
While the BNP is calling for elections following a minimum level of reform, the newly-formed National Citizens Party insists that elections be held only after comprehensive reforms are implemented.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has stated that the national elections will be held no later than June of next year.
