Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has proposed holding a national referendum to give legal legitimacy to the entire political reform process, including the formation of a caretaker government.
The proposal was presented after a meeting with the National Consensus Commission held on Saturday, where Jamaat`s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher stated that major points of agreement and key reform issues should be included in a referendum, potentially forming a “July Charter” or a broader national declaration.
He emphasized that a referendum is a democratic tool to ensure public representation and legal validation of reforms, noting that the timing of the referendum could be discussed but that it must take place before implementing any legal framework.
The day-long meeting, held at the LD Hall of the National Parliament, resulted in over 120 points of consensus.
The meeting was attended by commission members including Prof. Ali Riaz, Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, and Dr. Iftekharuzzaman.
Jamaat’s delegation included senior leaders such as Dr. Taher, acting Secretary General ATM Masum, and other central executive members.
