The High Court has commuted the death sentences of two convicts in the 2001 Ramna Batamul bombing case to life imprisonment.

The convicts, Maulana Taj Uddin and Jewel, were originally sentenced to death for their involvement in the deadly bombing that took place during a Bengali New Year celebration at Ramna Batamul in Dhaka.

In the same verdict, the court also sentenced nine other accused to 10 years in prison each for their roles in the attack.

The ruling was delivered on Tuesday, May 13, by a High Court bench consisting of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasrin Akter.

The bombing, carried out by the banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI), left 10 people dead and many injured, marking it as one of the deadliest attacks on a cultural event in Bangladesh’s history.

The verdict brings a long-awaited development in a case that has remained a symbol of extremist violence against cultural expression in the country.
