Ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the government has decided to assign Police Superintendents (SPs) through a lottery system. However, District Commissioners (DCs) will not be appointed using this method, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Md. Mokhlesur Rahman, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, told reporters at the Secretariat that civil service appointments have never been, and will not be, conducted through a lottery. “Now, complaints against DCs are addressed, and we have a fit list. Some new DC appointments have already been made, and more will follow. For stable positions, such as Joint Secretary-level DCs, we will make arrangements before the election,” he added.

The senior secretary said these measures are being taken to ensure a fair and smooth election. “If the preparations are thorough and the planned work is carried out properly, the election day will proceed without issues,” he said.

Earlier, on August 6, following a guideline meeting of the law and order committee before the election, the Home Affairs Adviser had stated that he holds the authority to transfer and assign SPs and police officers. He noted that the lottery for these appointments would be conducted in the presence of all relevant officials, including the president and general secretary of the Secretariat journalists’ association.
