Students of Dhaka College have placed 10-point demands including the removal of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ramna zone’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sazzadur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Harun Or Rashid and Officer in Charge of New Market police station SM Kaium.
Expressing anger the students questioned the role of police during the two-day long mayhem at New Market in the capital.
The demands were upheld during a press conference held at the college auditorium around 11:30 pm Wednesday.
Post-graduate students Masum Billah and Sujay Bala delivered written speech to the press.
The students alleged that police gave partial statements over the incident. They demanded the police apologise to the college authorities for this. Besides, they also pressed to identify the instigators and the culprits who attacked an ambulance and bring them to book.
More than a hundred students were injured in the attack carried out by the traders of New Market and law enforcers, the student said. They said, the New Market Business Owners' Association and the law enforcement agencies have to bear all medical costs of the injured. The family of an onlooker Nahid, who was killed in the attack of traders, has to be compensated.
Urging to install CCTV cameras at all shops and markets the students said, the footpaths have to keep free from illegal occupancy and extortion.
Demanding the overall security of the customers in the market, the students said, a special monitoring cell has to be formed to stop the nuisance of the traders in the name of selling and the sexual harassment of women customers.
They also called for the cancelation of the lease of Dhaka College’s land for Chandrima Supermarket and New Market.
