SC set Sunday to deliver verdict on Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration

The verdict on the appeal filed against the High Court’s decision declaring the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami invalid is scheduled for Sunday, June 1.

The case is listed as the top item before a four-judge appellate bench led by the Chief Justice.

Jamaat’s registration, initially granted in November 2008, was challenged in 2009 by several political figures, citing constitutional conflicts.

The High Court ruled in 2013 that the party’s registration was beyond legal authority and invalid. Although Jamaat was allowed to appeal, its plea for a stay order was rejected later that year.

In November 2023, the Appellate Division dismissed the party‍‍`s appeal due to the absence of key legal representatives. However, the court granted an opportunity for the appeal to be restored.

Following a change in political circumstances in August 2024—including the reversal of a ban imposed earlier that month—Jamaat sought to revive the case.

The court restored the appeal on October 22 after accepting a delay petition. Hearings resumed on December 3 and concluded on May 14. The final verdict is now due.
