Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq said open air events would not be allowed on the 31st Night to celebrate the New Year.
“We won’t allow any meeting, rally and musical event in the open place for the celebration of the New Year for the sake of people’s security. All programmes must be held indoors. No DJ party will be allowed,” he said while addressing a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre on Saturday morning.
Although there is no threat centring the New Year celebrations, the members of the Counter-Terrorism Unit and the detectives will be on high alert all over Dhaka to avoid any untoward incident, he said.
The DMP has taken special security measures in several areas, including Dhaka University, Hatirjheel, Banani, Gulshan and Baridhara on the eve of English New Year. Outsiders and vehicles will not be allowed to enter those areas after 8 pm.
The DMP commissioner said outsiders and vehicles will not be allowed to enter the Dhaka University campus after 6 pm. Vehicles of teachers, officers and employees residing in the residential areas of DU will be able to enter through Shahbagh Crossing subject to identification after the stipulated time.
The commissioner said the same guidelines are applicable for Hatirjheel, Banani, Gulshan and Baridhara areas. No one will be able to stay at those areas after 8 pm.
