Two leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami were killed and several others injured in a road accident in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur early Saturday while en route to the party`s rally in Dhaka.
The accident occurred around dawn at the Bhanga roundabout on the Dhaka-Khulna highway, confirmed Bhanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ashfaq Hossain.
The deceased were identified as Abu Sayeed (55) and Mohammad Amanat Sheikh (55), both from Dacope upazila in Khulna. Abu Sayeed was the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dacope unit.
According to police, the victims were traveling from Khulna to Dhaka in a minibus to attend the Jamaat-e-Islami’s national assembly.
Their vehicle had stopped at the Bhanga roundabout for a break when a Dhaka-bound Royal Express bus from Khulna rammed into the stationary minibus.
Two individuals standing in front of the vehicle were killed on the spot, while 8–9 passengers inside were injured.
OC Ashfaq said, “Upon receiving the report, members of Bhanga Police Station, Bhanga Highway Police, and Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. The bodies and the minibus are currently in the custody of the Bhanga Highway Police.”
