DC requests EC to reconsider Bhanga boundary redefinition

Faridpur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Kamrul Hasan Molya has requested the Election Commission (EC) to reconsider the inclusion of Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga upazila in the Faridpur-4 parliamentary constituency.

The DC sent a letter on Monday to Senior Secretary of the EC Akhter Ahmed outlining the issue.

In the letter, the DC noted that the parliamentary boundaries of Faridpur-2 and Faridpur-4 have recently been redrawn. Under the new plan, Algi and Hamirdi unions — previously part of Faridpur-4 — have been shifted to Faridpur-2.

Following the announcement on 4 September, residents of Bhanga upazila, including Algi and Hamirdi unions, launched protests demanding reversal of the new boundary.

Demonstrations have included road and railway blockades, creating escalating law-and-order concerns, the letter read.

On 15 September, protesters vandalized and set fire to the offices of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, the Upazila Election Officer, Bhanga Police Station, the Highway Police Office, and several government vehicles. Continued blockades on roads and railways severely disrupted communications with 21 districts in the south, causing widespread public suffering.

The DC wrote that residents of both constituencies have rejected the new boundary and that mass participation in the protests underscores the depth of public discontent. He warned that failure to reconsider the boundary may lead to a serious deterioration of law and order.

In conclusion, the DC requested that Algi and Hamirdi unions be re-included in the Faridpur-4 constituency (Bhanga, Sadarpur, and Charbhadrasan) instead of Faridpur-2 (Nagarkanda and Saltha), and urged the Election Commission to take the necessary steps to restore the previous parliamentary boundaries.
