Police take shelter in mosque as violent clashes erupt in Bhanga

Bhanga in Faridpur has descended into chaos as violent clashes broke out between police and protesters on Monday.

Thousands of agitated demonstrators seized control of the Bhanga Gol Chattar area, while police officers were seen taking shelter inside the Bhanga Eidgah Mosque for safety.

The unrest began around 11:30 a.m., when local residents suddenly poured onto the streets despite heightened security measures by the administration. Protesters blocked at least six points on two major highways, halting all traffic and leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded. Law enforcement and demonstrators were seen facing off at multiple locations.

At noon, hundreds of protesters at Bhanga Bus Stand on the Dhaka–Barishal Highway dropped electric poles onto the road and later set tires on fire to reinforce their blockade. Police and members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) stood guard nearby with riot gear. As news of the blockade spread, residents in other areas also began blocking sections of the Dhaka–Khulna and Dhaka–Barishal highways.

The protest follows a previously announced three-day blockade starting Saturday over constituency boundary changes. On Sunday night, police filed a case naming 90 individuals for disturbing law and order. Earlier, police detained MM Siddik Mia, coordinator of the All-Party Unity Council and chairman of Algi Union Parishad, who had led the blockade campaign.

Since morning, army and police patrols have been active across the area to prevent further escalation, but the situation remained volatile throughout the day.
