The ongoing protests and blockades in Bhanga, Faridpur, demanding parliamentary constituency redemarcation, have been suspended until Saturday.
The announcement was made by the All-Party Unity Council, which has been leading the movement.
Leaders said that if their demands are not met by Sunday, they will announce fresh and tougher programs. The suspension of protests has brought relief to passengers and transport operators in the area.
Md. Palash Mia, a representative of the All-Party Unity Council from Algi Union, confirmed the suspension to media this afternoon. “We have decided to wait until Sunday. If no solution is reached, we will resume tougher programs,” he said.
Earlier at 1:30 pm, Syed Modarres Ali Isha, president of the district BNP, announced the suspension at Bhanga Eidgah Mosque premises in the presence of leaders from BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, Gono Odhikar Parishad, and Khelafat Majlis.
Calling recent violence a “conspiracy,” Syed Modarres Ali Isha said, “Those who do not want national elections are trying to fish in troubled waters.”
Tuesday marked the last day of the previously announced three-day program. Protesters briefly blocked the Dhaka–Barishal Highway in the morning using tree logs and electric poles but withdrew around 9:30 am.
A heavy deployment of law enforcement personnel — including the army, BGB, RAB, and police — was seen patrolling various areas to maintain order.
Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Md. Kamrul Hasan Molya said authorities have informed senior officials about the demands and noted that a High Court hearing on a related petition is scheduled for 21 September. “Everyone must wait until then,” he added, saying damage assessments from the violence are ongoing.
Additional Police Superintendent (Administration) Shamsul said no cases had been filed in the 24 hours following the violence, though the process was “underway.”
