Md Nahid Islam, the Information and Broadcasting Adviser, stated that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman should not be regarded as the father of the nation as claimed by the Awami League.
He emphasized that many individuals have played significant roles in the country’s history.
Speaking on Wednesday about the interim government’s decision to cancel eight national holidays, including March 7, Nahid accused the Awami League of designating their party’s commemorative days as national holidays.
In response to journalists` questions, he argued that the Awami League has distorted history, claiming, "Even Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been misrepresented by the Awami League. The veneration of his statues in Bangladesh resembles a fascist ideology. We cannot accept such tendencies in a government formed through a mass uprising or in a new Bangladesh."
Nahid clarified that while they are not erasing March 7 from history or denying Sheikh Mujibur Rahman`s significance, the way the Awami League has commemorated these events needs to be rewritten objectively.
He pointed out that there is a political motive behind designating certain days as national holidays, which he believes should not continue in a government established through popular support.
He referred to the contributions made in 1947, 1952, and 1971, stating that many played vital roles and that there are multiple founding figures, not just one.
In conclusion, he acknowledged March 7 as an important day but asserted that it does not warrant the status of a national holiday. "The Awami League has mismanaged many such observances. We are simply abolishing the national days that were imposed in a fascist manner by the Awami League."
