Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, stated that the nation is currently passing through a critical phase and must navigate it wisely.
Referring to recent events that have caused concern among both locals and expatriates, he said that Jamaat, as a responsible political organization, is keeping a close watch on developments.
He made these remarks on Saturday (May 24) during the party’s semiannual central Majlis-e-Shura session held at Al-Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar, Dhaka.
The event was attended by top party leaders, including Naib-e-Ameer, the acting Secretary General, Assistant Secretaries General, and both male and female members of the Majlis-e-Shura.
In his opening speech, Dr. Shafiqur said that the party had earlier convened an emergency meeting of the central executive council to review the current political situation.
“We emphasized that pushing the nation into further uncertainty through conflict, confrontation, or mudslinging is unacceptable,” he noted.
He mentioned that after reviewing the overall situation, the party had taken several organizational steps. “To overcome this uncertainty, we called upon the chief advisor of the interim government to initiate an all-party dialogue. We believe that such discussions will help reduce national anxiety and pave the way for resolving the crisis, In Shaa Allah.”
He reiterated their earlier demand for a clear roadmap for reforms and elections. “Due to the lack of a transparent roadmap, public trust has been shaken.
To restore confidence, we urge the government to present a clear plan,” he added.
The Jamaat chief also called for “proper justice for fascist actions,” noting that although the process may take time, visible progress must begin soon to assure the public.
On two recent sensitive issues—establishment of a humanitarian corridor and management of Chattogram seaport—he recommended that decisions be taken after consulting security experts and all stakeholders or be left to the elected parliament.
Regarding the military, Dr. Shafiqur said, “Our army is a source of national pride and has played a crucial role during important moments in our history. We must not politicize the military. The people expect that the army will continue to safeguard our sovereignty while political parties and the military each carry out their respective responsibilities with integrity.”
