A court has imposed a travel ban on former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 38 other individuals in connection with the killing of a man named Md. Jahangir during the July movement in the Bhatarah police station area of Dhaka.
Inspector Zakir Hossain of the court’s prosecution division confirmed the order on Wednesday, September 17.
According to him, fearing that the accused might flee the country, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Nazmul Amin of Bhatarah Police Station, requested the court to impose travel restrictions. On July 2, Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Juel Rana approved the request.
Among the notable individuals subject to the travel ban are Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Additional DIG of Police Mohammad Zahirul Islam, former Chief Election Commissioners Kazi Rakibuddin, KM Nurul Huda, and Habibul Awal, Awami League Women’s League member Nuzhat Sarwat Toma, Mirpur Jubo League’s Social Welfare Secretary Md. Rakibul Islam, and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Swechchhasebak League’s Organizational Secretary Md. Bashir Ahmed, among others.
The case alleges that on July 21 of last year, Md. Jahangir participated in the movement in the Bhatarah area. To suppress the protests, Sheikh Hasina allegedly instructed other accused individuals to incite riots. With financial support from Awami League donors, the accused reportedly attacked demonstrators with weapons, ammunition, and sticks, and detonated multiple crude explosives to disperse the movement. During the attack, Jahangir suffered severe injuries and died.
Following the incident, a murder case was filed on February 24 this year at Bhatarah Police Station.
