Special allocation in budget for July Uprising victims and families

In the proposed national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year, the government of Bangladesh is setting up a special fund worth approximately BDT 1,500 crore to support the families of those killed and injured in the July Uprising.

The fund will be used to provide one-time financial grants, monthly allowances, medical treatment both at home and abroad, skill training for employment, and residential flats in Dhaka’s Mirpur area.

The largest portion of the fund, around BDT 761 crore, is earmarked for building housing units.

An additional BDT 250 crore is allocated for one-time grants. Other portions will cover healthcare, monthly stipends, training, and other support.

Currently, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has listed 834 martyr families and over 12,000 injured individuals across ten divisions.

The government plans to increase the one-time grant amount per martyr family to BDT 30 lakh, with an additional BDT 20 lakh in savings bonds to be given next year.

Injured individuals will receive varied support based on the severity of their injuries, divided into three categories: Category A (most severely injured), Category B (partially disabled), and Category C (recovered). Monthly allowances will range from BDT 10,000 to BDT 20,000.

Some injured individuals who do not fall into any defined category will receive a one-time grant of BDT 2–3 lakh. Medical grants of up to BDT 2 lakh will continue in the new fiscal year, with higher amounts for more severe cases.

The government also plans to construct 25 fourteen-story buildings in Mirpur, offering 1,000–1,250 square foot flats free of cost to martyr families and Category A injured individuals. The two-year project will include essential amenities like schools, mosques, community centers, and utility services.

A major focus of the initiative is on livelihood opportunities. Injured individuals will receive training in trades such as freelancing, livestock rearing, driving, and mobile servicing.

The government also intends to ensure lifetime free healthcare and education for affected individuals, with all financial support to be directly transferred to beneficiaries’ bank or mobile accounts.
