Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature for “his relentless and visionary work that reaffirms the power of art even amid apocalyptic fear.”

Born in 1954 in the small town of Gyula, near Hungary’s border with Romania, Krasznahorkai is known for his dense, philosophical prose and long, flowing sentences that explore chaos, decay, and redemption.

His debut novel, Satantango (first published in 1985), set in a remote rural village resembling his birthplace, marked his literary breakthrough and became a landmark in Hungarian literature.

The Nobel Committee described Krasznahorkai as “a thoughtful writer with a precisely measured voice,” praising his ability to transform existential dread into profound artistic expression.
