In a major development, two people, including Kamal Uddin Rana, the central joint general secretary of the banned organization Chhatra League and the president of Dhaka University’s Zahurul Haque Hall, have been sent on one-day remand.

This follows their arrest in connection with the brutal attack on students at Dhaka University.

The other individual arrested is Abdullah Khan Shaishob, the organizing secretary of Surjensen Hall’s Chhatra League branch, aged 26.

On Sunday, the two were brought before Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. The case’s investigating officer, Irfan Khan, a sub-inspector from the Detective Branch (DB) of the Ramna Zone, requested a ten-day remand for both men.

However, their lawyers, Farzana Yasmin Rakhi and Md. Tarikul Islam, asked the court to cancel the remand and grant bail instead.

After hearing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Hock decided to approve a one-day remand.

The two suspects were detained late on Saturday night in Dhaka after being identified as key suspects in the attack on the university students.

The incident took place on July 15 when Dhaka University students, who were part of a protest against discrimination, came under attack by members of Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Awami League.

The assault left over 300 students injured. Following the attack, a case of attempted murder was filed at Shahbagh Police Station by Arman Hossain, a student from Sergeant Zahirul Haque Hall.

The case named 220 individuals, including Chhatra League president Saddam Hossain, as accused in the attack.
