In a concerning incident at the High Court area of Dhaka, police used batons to disperse a group of hill tribe students, injuring seven individuals, including six students.
The incident occurred on Thursday, January 16, around 1:15 PM, as the students were making their way towards the Secretariat from the High Court.
Among those injured were Tasmia Tabassum Nebula, a 22-year-old third-year law student from Dhaka University, Zahidul Islam Riyad (22), Maruf Hossain (20), a first-year Bengali student from Northern University, Tayeb Islam (24), a third-year economics student at Dhaka College, Ivan Tahsib (23), a fourth-year journalism student at Jagannath University, Sumaiya Khatun (24), a fourth-year sociology student from Eden College, and Mohammad Babul (48), a passerby.
Ivan Tahsib, who was part of the protest, shared that the group had gathered to protest the previous day`s attack on indigenous students.
They marched from Dhaka University`s Raju Sculpture, heading toward the Ministry of Home Affairs, passing through the High Court area.
Upon reaching the area, the police blocked their path.
As they tried to move past, police charged at them with batons and also used water cannons, leading to the injuries.
Md. Faruk, the officer in charge at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, confirmed that all seven injured were brought to the hospital for treatment.
He mentioned that their injuries were not serious, and they are being treated in the hospital`s emergency department.
