Attack during July Uprising: 289 expelled from JU, 9 teachers suspended

A total of 289 leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have been temporarily expelled from Jahangirnagar University (JU) for their involvement in attacks on students during the student-public movement in the July uprising. 

Additionally, 9 teachers have been temporarily suspended from their jobs for allegedly supporting the attacks.

These details were shared by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kamrul Ahsan, after a syndicate meeting that concluded at 3 AM on Monday night. 

Earlier, the syndicate meeting had begun at 11 AM in the council room of the university’s new administrative building.

Vice-Chancellor Kamrul Ahsan said, “During the anti-discrimination student movement, 289 leaders and activists of the Chhatra League have been temporarily expelled from the university for their involvement in the attacks on the students of Jahangirnagar University. 

Additionally, a higher investigation committee has been formed.

"Among those Chhatra League leaders and activists, those whose studentship has ended will have their certificates suspended. The results of those who have appeared for exams and viva will be withheld, and the regular students will be temporarily expelled."

He added, “Nine teachers have been temporarily suspended for their alleged involvement in the attacks by Chhatra League and the police during the movement. Preliminary investigations have revealed that several more teachers were also involved in the attack. A structured committee has been formed to collect detailed evidence against them.”

Meanwhile, a decision has been made to revoke the pension benefits of the university’s former Vice-Chancellor Professor Nurul Alam and Registrar Abu Hasan, as they have retired from their positions.

Additionally, based on the students‍‍` demands, the decision has been made to remove the names of structures associated with members of the Sheikh family at the university.

As per the decision, a committee has been formed to rename Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Sheikh Russell Hall, and Sheikh Hasina Hall.

Furthermore, the night of July 15 has been declared as ‍‍`Black Night‍‍` at Jahangirnagar University. On that night, in the presence of several teachers, members of the Chhatra League and external miscreants attacked inside the Vice-Chancellor’s residence.
