Dhaka University mourns death of Shammo

DU student and JCD leader Shahriar Alam Shammo was fatally attacked by unidentified assailants in Suhrawardy Udyan on Tuesday night.

Dhaka University (DU) is observing a mourning day on Thursday following the death of a student who was killed on campus Tuesday night.

Following the tragic incident, the university authorities suspended all classes and examinations until 1:00 PM on the day.

The victim, Shahriar Alam Shammo—a student at the Institute of Education and Research and a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) DU unit—was reportedly attacked by unidentified assailants in the Suhrawardy Udyan area on Tuesday night, leading to his death.

In response, the DU administration declared Thursday as a day of mourning.

The campus remained quiet Thursday morning, with only a few people seen around. With classes and exams halted, classrooms remained locked, although administrative operations continued as usual.

Meanwhile, JCD’s central committee announced countrywide protest programs for Thursday, including wearing black badges and organizing sit-ins at educational institutions.

The incident sparked student protests and heightened concerns over campus safety.

On Wednesday, the DU authorities held an emergency meeting attended by local government, rural development and cooperatives adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, along with DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan. The meeting resulted in several decisions aimed at strengthening security around the Suhrawardy Udyan area.

Police arrested three individuals in connection with the killing on Wednesday. A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate later ordered their detention.

That night, unidentified individuals set fire to the home of one of the arrestees, Tamim Hawlader, located in the Brahmondi area of Madaripur Sadar upazila, according to Madaripur Superintendent of Police Md Naimul Hasan.

Additionally, the DU administration formed a seven-member committee to investigate the incident.
