The body of a student from Buriganga River was recovered from the river near Bosila Bridge in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, by river police on Sunday (June 14) afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Dip Majumdar, a student of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at Jahangirnagar University. He was part of the 50th batch (2020–21 academic session).
Witnesses reported that the body showed signs of decomposition, suggesting that the death likely occurred one to two days earlier.
According to the victim’s family and classmates, Dip left home on Friday following a family dispute. His mobile phone had been switched off since then, and despite searches in various locations, he could not be found. A general diary (GD) was filed at the local police station on Saturday.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Mahfuzur Rahman of the River Police said they recovered the body after receiving information about a floating corpse in the river.
The body was later sent to the morgue of Mitford Hospital for an autopsy. Authorities said the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report. Legal procedures are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the sudden and mysterious death has cast a shadow of grief over the Jahangirnagar University campus. Students, friends, and well-wishers have expressed deep sorrow on social media and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
Students have also demanded a fair and thorough investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause of death and take action against those responsible if any wrongdoing is found.
