Dhaka records year’s heaviest rainfall in 6 hours

Continuous overnight rain has thrown life in Dhaka into disarray, with roads submerged and commuters facing severe disruption. The downpour, which began late Tuesday night, continued into Wednesday morning without pause.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Dhaka recorded 132 millimeters of rain in just six hours between midnight and 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday — the highest in the country during that period. In the past 24 hours, the capital received 203 millimeters of rainfall, the highest of the year so far.

Persistent waterlogging caused major traffic bottlenecks across the city, leaving office-goers and pedestrians struggling to reach their destinations.

Meanwhile, heavy rain has also been reported in parts of Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Mymensingh divisions. Meteorologist Md. Tariful Nawaz Kabir of the BMD said showers are expected to continue throughout the day.

“The rainfall recorded in Dhaka over six hours was the highest in the country and possibly the heaviest in the capital this year,” Tariful said. He clarified that the rain was not caused by the low-pressure system over the western Bay of Bengal, but rather by the formation of deep convective clouds.

The BMD forecast warned of heavy rain in Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Mymensingh divisions on Wednesday. In northern districts, including Bogura, continuous showers have already begun.

Tariful added that rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorms are likely to continue across different parts of the country until October 4.
