Deadly accident claims 6 lives near Padma Bridge

At least six people were killed as an ambulance crashed into a speeding truck from behind near Padma Bridge.

The accident took place in Jazira area of the Shariatpur district on early Tuesday.

The ambulance driver was unable to sleep for 26 hours, the police claim, which caused him to fall asleep while driving.

The deceased were identified as ambulance driver Rabiul Islam, 29, hailer of Khulna, its helper Jilani, 28, resident of Madaripur district, cancer patient Jahanara Begum, 55, from Patuakhali district, her daughter Lutfun Nahar Lima, 28, Fazle Rabbi, 28, also a hailer of Patuakhali district and Barishal Bureau Chief of Daily Nabachetana Md Masud Rana, 38.

The truck loaded with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was struck from behind by the Dhaka-bound ambulance from Barishal at around 4:30am on Tuesday, according to Md Amjad Hossain, deputy assistant director of Shariatpur Fire Service.

On information, police along with fire service officials rushed to the spot and brought the bodies to Jazira Upazila Health Complex, he added.

According to Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Kamrul Hasan Sohel, the Jazira Upazila administration gave each family Tk 10,000 as humanitarian help.
