Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin has said that party symbols will not be used in the upcoming local government elections, although the election dates have not yet been finalized.

He made the remarks on Monday at a ceremony held at the Election Training Institute in Agargaon, where the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy (RFED) welcomed its new committee and bid farewell to the outgoing one.

The CEC noted that while party symbols will not be used this time, political parties have already begun supporting their preferred candidates, which could make the elections more tense.

We want to establish a culture of good elections, he said, adding that not just one election, but all future elections should be truly free, fair, and peaceful.

He urged political parties to work together to ensure violence-free elections, pointing out that local government polls in the past had often been marked by killings and violent incidents.

He added that competition can become especially intense in rural areas, where conflicts sometimes arise even between candidates from the same family or locality.

Nasir Uddin also said that the Election Commission alone cannot ensure a successful election, stressing the need for cooperation from law enforcement agencies, the administration, political parties, candidates, journalists, and voters.

He further said that the Election Commission is placing strong emphasis on public awareness campaigns ahead of the local government elections.
