Any individual formally charged with crimes against humanity will no longer be eligible to contest elections in Bangladesh.

The provision has been added through an amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal (Third Amendment) Ordinance.

The decision was announced on Thursday (September 4) by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam during a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka. Earlier in the day, the Advisory Council approved the amendment.

According to the press secretary, a new Section 20C has been inserted into the law. Under this provision, if an individual is formally indicted under the International Crimes Tribunal Act, they will be disqualified from being elected or remaining as a Member of Parliament.

The restriction also applies to positions in local government bodies — including member, commissioner, chairman, mayor, or administrator.

Additionally, such individuals will be ineligible for employment in the Republic’s service or any other institution.
