BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir sat down with Charmonai Pir Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, the Amir of Islami Andolon Bangladesh, to discuss important issues affecting the nation.

The two leaders had a closed-door meeting at Islami Andolon’s central office in Purana Paltan, Dhaka, on Monday, January 27, at 12:30 PM.

The talks were seen as a move toward building greater unity between the parties.

Joining Mirza Fakhrul was BNP Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu, while the Islami Andolon team included Senior Presidium Member Syed Mosaddeq Billah Al Madani, Secretary General Yunus Ahmed Sheikh, Presidium Member Ashraf Ali Akn, Joint Secretary General Gazi Ataur Rahman, and Assistant Secretary General Imtiaz Alam.

Following the meeting, Islami Andolon released a statement outlining ten key decisions that were made during the discussions.

These decisions point to an effort to form a united front on various pressing national issues. Here are the ten agreed-upon points:

1.      National Unity for a Sovereign State: Both parties agreed to work toward building a national unity that aims to create a free, sovereign, and democratic welfare state. The goal is to ensure the country is free from foreign dominance, expansionism, and imperialism.

2.      Swift Justice for Criminals: There was a strong emphasis on bringing corrupt individuals, terrorists, murderers, and money launderers to justice quickly, with exemplary punishments to ensure accountability.

3.      Consensus on Human Rights: They stressed the need to create a national consensus on protecting voting rights and other basic human rights for all citizens.

4.      Immediate Election Reforms: Both sides highlighted the importance of carrying out necessary reforms and holding a free and fair election as soon as possible to restore democracy.

5.      Controlling Price Hikes and Restoring Law and Order: Tackling the rising prices of essentials and securing the rights of marginalized people was a priority. They also emphasized the need to restore law and order across the country.

6.      Unite Against Awami ‘Fascism’: The parties committed to working together to rebuild the country and oppose what they described as "Awami fascism." They stressed that all anti-fascist forces should work hand in hand.

7.      No Attacks on Allies: A key point of the agreement was to avoid attacking or making hostile comments about any other anti-fascist group.

8.      Prevent Future Fascist Regimes: Both parties agreed to remain united in preventing any future fascist forces, such as the Awami League, from coming to power.

9.      No Decisions Against Shariah: It was agreed that no decisions would be taken that are against Islamic Shariah. They also vowed not to make any anti-Islamic statements.

10.  Remove Awami Loyalists in the Administration: The leaders emphasized the need to remove the remaining collaborators of the current Awami government who are still in positions of power within the administration.

Earlier on January 21, Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Shafiqur Rahman had also met with Charmonai Pir Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim in Barisal for a similar discussion, highlighting the growing collaboration between these parties.

This meeting is seen as part of a broader strategy to unite opposition forces in the run-up to the next election.

With these ten points agreed upon, both parties seem determined to push for changes that they believe are necessary for the country’s future.
