CEC pledges ‘mirror-like transparent election,’ seeks media partnership

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasir Uddin has reiterated his commitment to holding a “mirror-like transparent” national election, saying that the Election Commission (EC) is determined to ensure a free, fair, and credible voting process with active media partnership.

“We want to conduct a fair and beautiful election — this is not just rhetoric. We want the media as our partners in this journey,” the CEC said on Monday (October 6) while delivering his opening remarks at a dialogue with electronic media journalists at the EC headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Nasir Uddin emphasized that the dialogue was not a mere formality, noting, “We want to move forward with your opinions. Your cooperation is crucial in creating equal opportunities for all and in addressing misinformation and disinformation.”

Highlighting the commission’s recent progress, the CEC said, “Since taking office, we have completed several important tasks. The voter list has been updated — over 2.1 million deceased voters have been identified, many of whom were previously found to have cast votes, as reported by the media. We have also enlisted over 4.3 million eligible new voters.”

He added that the gender gap among voters has significantly narrowed: “The difference between male and female voters was once 3 million; it has now come down to 1.8 million. We have been able to inspire women, who were losing interest in becoming voters.”

The CEC also announced plans to introduce an IT-supported postal ballot system for expatriates, based on consultations with experts. “Around one million people are involved in election duties — including law enforcement personnel, government employees, and even detainees. We are taking steps to include them in the voting process. Although the provision already exists in law, we aim to implement it this time,” he said.

Reaffirming the EC’s commitment to transparency, Nasir Uddin stated, “We want to proceed through a clear, transparent process — to conduct an election as transparent as a mirror. For that, we seek your support and suggestions.”

He further noted that the EC has instructed its commissioners and officials to hold regular media briefings to maintain openness and communication.

The meeting, moderated by Acting EC Secretary K. M. Ali Newaz, was attended by all four election commissioners, EC officials, and representatives from various media outlets.
