Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader has appointed Barrister Shamim Haider Patwary as the party`s new secretary general, replacing Mujibul Haque Chunnu, amid escalating internal tensions over organizational direction and the party council schedule.
The decision was formally announced on Monday by the party chairman’s press secretary, Khandaker Delwar Jalali.
According to the statement, GM Quader exercised his authority under the party constitution to relieve Chunnu of his duties and install Patwary as his successor. The change has already taken effect.
Before his promotion, Barrister Shamim Haider Patwary held the positions of presidium member and additional secretary general within the party.
He has also previously served as an advisor to the party`s late founder and former chairman, Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
Patwary entered parliament through a by-election in Gaibandha-1 in March 2018, following the death of MP Golam Mostafa Ahmed. He was re-elected in the 11th National Parliamentary Election held in December 2018, running under the party’s traditional "plough" symbol.
The leadership reshuffle comes against the backdrop of increasing friction between GM Quader’s faction and other top leaders, including senior co-chairman Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, co-chairman ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader, and their allies.
Sources within the party suggest that disagreements over the timing of the next party council, distribution of power, and strategy for the upcoming national elections have widened internal divisions.
With this significant change in leadership, GM Quader appears to be consolidating control over the party at a critical juncture.
