Jamaat-e-Islami to regain registration with scales symbol: EC

The Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) has decided to reinstate the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, including its traditional electoral symbol, the scales (Daripalla).

The decision was announced on Wednesday, June 4, by Election Commissioner Abul Fazl Md. Sanaullah following the sixth commission meeting held at the Election Commission headquarters.

Addressing journalists, Commissioner Sanaullah stated that the matter of Jamaat’s electoral symbol was carefully reviewed. “The party was granted registration with the scales symbol in a single gazette notification back in 2008. As per the Representation of the People Order (RPO), once an electoral symbol is allocated to a political party, it remains reserved for that party,” he said.

Regarding the court’s directive to reinstate the party’s registration, Sanaullah confirmed that the EC had taken into account all relevant legal aspects, including recent judicial observations and references, particularly those concerning the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election.

He added, “We have thoroughly examined the Appellate Division’s observations on the DSCC case. From our perspective, the publication of the gazette marks the completion of the EC’s responsibility in this matter.”

The decision marks a significant development in the political landscape, allowing Jamaat-e-Islami to once again participate in national elections under its historic symbol.
