Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has said that no decision has yet been made on launching a joint program with other political parties.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s central office in Dhaka’s Moghbazar on Monday (15 September), he stated that while several parties share similar demands, including proportional representation (PR) in national elections, there has been no formal agreement on a coordinated movement.
The press conference was organized to announce a three-day program to press for five demands, including holding the next national election in February based on the July National Charter, introducing PR in both houses of parliament, ensuring a level playing field for all political parties, bringing the alleged abuses and corruption of the current government to justice, and banning the activities of the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance.
Taher said that Jamaat has long supported proportional representation in both houses of parliament and is in contact with other parties that support the system.
He criticized the Election Commission’s comments on PR as misleading, arguing that while the constitution requires elections every five years, it does not prescribe a specific electoral method.
Asked whether a joint program could lead to a broader electoral alliance, he said discussions are ongoing with parties that back the July Charter. He also noted that delays and legal complications around the charter are largely due to political disagreements.
Taher added that there are still five months before the election, leaving time to implement the demands, give the July Charter a legal basis, or even hold a referendum if necessary.
