Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a new program of activities, calling for five demands including holding national elections in February.
The announcement was made on Monday morning (15 September) at a press conference held at Al-Falah Auditorium in Mogbazar, Dhaka, by the party’s central Naib-e-Amir, Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher.
At the press briefing, Dr. Taher emphasized that the only way to resolve the ongoing political crisis in the country is to hold free, fair, and acceptable elections based on the July national voter list. He outlined Jamaat-e-Islami’s five-point agenda aimed at ensuring people’s voting rights and establishing a democratic state.
The party’s demands include holding national elections in February based on the July voter list, introducing proportional representation (PR) in the elections, and ensuring a level playing field for all political parties. They also call for bringing to justice the alleged oppression, corruption, and abuses of the current government, as well as banning the activities of the National Party and the 14-party alliance.
Dr. Taher warned that if the public’s legitimate demands are not addressed, there would be no alternative to mass movements. He also announced a series of upcoming protest programs: a rally and demonstration in Dhaka on 18 September, protests in all divisional cities on 19 September, and demonstrations across districts and upazilas on 26 September.
He further stressed that the July national voter list must be given legal backing to prevent the sacrifices and gains of the people from being undermined. Dr. Taher reiterated that there is no substitute for ensuring citizens’ voting rights to establish democracy and accountable governance.
