Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Sunday said that the method of holding the upcoming national election will depend on the preferences of political parties.

Speaking at an event in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka, he noted that it is up to the parties to decide whether the election will follow a proportional representation (PR) system or continue under the existing process.

He made the remarks while addressing the presentation of a survey conducted by the research organization Innovation at The Daily Star’s conference room. Commenting on the survey, Shafiqul Alam said the figures indicate public confidence in the government.

He added that 95 percent of respondents expressed willingness to vote, which he said reflects the prospect of an inclusive election. “If everyone comes to vote, the election will naturally be better,” he remarked.

The survey revealed that 56 percent of people are still unaware of the PR system. Among respondents, 21.8 percent said they want the PR system, while 22.2 percent said they do not.

The survey, which polled 10,413 people, also found that 69.9 percent believe the interim government is capable of holding a neutral election.
