Referendum demand a strategy to delay national election: Salahuddin Ahmed

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has termed the demand for a referendum as a strategy to delay the upcoming national election.

Speaking at a discussion organized by the youth wing of Nagorik Oikya at the National Press Club on Monday (October 6), he said that while the BNP has no objection to holding a referendum, it should be conducted alongside the national election.

He also alleged that some political parties are trying to destabilize the country using the issue of proportional representation (PR).

Salahuddin further said that the main challenge for the upcoming election lies in confronting the fallen fascist forces and both domestic and foreign conspiracies.

However, he expressed confidence that if political unity is maintained, those attempting to derail the election will fail and their trials will continue.

Commenting on the reported move to ban political parties through executive orders, the BNP leader warned that such actions would make the future of politics in Bangladesh even more dangerous.

He emphasized that any such decision should follow a proper legal process to ensure international credibility.

Addressing concerns about the public’s trust in the police force, Salahuddin acknowledged the lack of confidence but asserted that it is ultimately the people who will make the upcoming election credible. He added that the army and other security forces will also perform their duties during the polls.
