Tarique Rahman calls for protection of sovereignty and restoration of democracy

BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has urged the nation to protect Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty by resisting the conspiracies of “domestic and foreign evil forces” and to work toward the restoration of democracy.

In a message to the media on Thursday, marking the death anniversary of Shaheed Naziruddin Jehad, who was killed during the anti-Ershad movement in the 1990s, Tarique Rahman emphasized that true democracy goes beyond elections, encompassing the freedom and fundamental rights of the people.

He said, “To keep the spirit of democracy alive, free and fair elections must be ensured. Inspired by the sacrifice of Shaheed Jehad, we must resist all conspiracies, protect our sovereignty, and restore democracy.”

Tarique Rahman described Jehad as “an unforgettable name in the anti-autocracy movement of the 1990s.” He added that Jehad’s blood sparked the mass uprising that eventually toppled the autocratic regime of H.M. Ershad, paving the way for multi-party democracy and freedom of the press.

He continued, “Autocrat Ershad murdered democracy. Shaheed Jehad sacrificed his life to re-establish it on a firm foundation. If we fail to fulfill that dream, his soul will remain in pain.”

In a separate statement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “The dream and ideals for which Shaheed Naziruddin Jehad embraced martyrdom must be realized by establishing democratic values in every sphere of the state and society. Only then will his soul find peace.”
