BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has emerged victorious in two constituencies Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6, according to unofficial results shared on Thursday.
Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party media cell, said early counts indicate Tarique secured wins in both seats.
Earlier in the day, Tarique cast his vote in the 13th national parliamentary election at the Gulshan Model High School and College polling centre in Dhaka. He arrived at the centre around 9:30 am, accompanied by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima Rahman.
Speaking to reporters after voting, Tarique urged people to turn out in large numbers, saying citizens had waited a long time to exercise their rights. He said strong voter participation would help prevent any attempts to disrupt the electoral process.
Tarique also said he had received reports of some unwanted incidents from different parts of the country the previous night. He added that restoring law and order would be a top priority if he is formally elected.
He described voting as the main way people express their power in a democracy and said he hoped the election would reflect the true will of the voters through a peaceful and fair process.
Voting across the country began at 7:30 am and continued until 4:00 pm, according to the Election Commission. Voters were seen arriving at polling centres in different areas of the capital throughout the morning amid tight security.
