Saudi Arabia earned a valuable point after a spirited performance against Uruguay in their FIFA World Cup opening match, with the Group H encounter ending in a 1-1 draw.

Played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, USA, Saudi Arabia took the lead in the first half. In the 41st minute, Abdulelah Al-Amri converted from a corner opportunity to give the Middle Eastern side a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

After the break, Uruguay took control of the match. Led by Federico Valverde, Manuel Ugarte and Darwin Núñez, the South American side launched a series of attacks. However, Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais produced a solid display to deny several attempts.

Despite sustained pressure, Uruguay struggled to find an equalizer for much of the second half. They eventually leveled the score in the 80th minute when Maxi Araújo found the net to make it 1-1.

Following the equalizer, Uruguay pushed for a winner, but neither side was able to score again, and the match ended in a draw.

Earlier in the group, World Cup debutants Cape Verde held Spain to a goalless draw. As a result, all four teams in Group H finished the opening round with one point each.

At present, Group H is completely level, with Saudi Arabia and Uruguay edging ahead of Spain and Cape Verde on goal difference.

In the next round of fixtures, Saudi Arabia will face Spain, while Uruguay take on Cape Verde.
