Experts warn of increased seismic activity across south Asia

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck India’s Assam state on Sunday afternoon and was felt in Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh shortly after 5:15 pm, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received.

Seismologists and independent observers note that a regional earthquake forecast—issued about 15 hours before Sunday’s tremor—had already warned of heightened seismic activity across South Asia.

That forecast specifically mentioned the Hindu Kush, Himalayan, Eurasian, Indian, and Burma subplates as being highly active and likely to produce mild to moderate earthquakes.

The Assam quake appears to confirm the early prediction. Experts now caution that the broader region remains in a highly active state, and further mild-to-moderate tremors (magnitude 3.2 to 6.8) may be felt in the coming 10–12 days across Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Tibet, China, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. Smaller but noticeable tremors may also occur in Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.

Authorities have urged people in these areas to stay alert, follow safety guidelines, and pay close attention to official updates on seismic activity.
