State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said that no bridge could be constructed without the approval of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
He said this while talking to the reporters after attending the Deputy Commissioner (DC) conference held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Thursday.
“Various types of vessels are operating in our rivers. In this case, the bridges should be built keeping in mind which river will be used by which vessel. The clearance will be issued by BIWTA,” Khalid said.
In this case, Khalid asked the DCs to supervise that no one including Roads, LGED, Bridge Department could construct any bridge without BIWTA’s prior permission.
The state minister said, “We want our waterways to be fine. The Prime Minister said - if the blood does not flow in the veins, people’s live will stop. Similarly, if water does not flow in riverine Bangladesh, the county will come to a standstill.”
